How to Print Your Own Checks at Home

Printing your own checks at home can save you time and money. However, it’s important to know the process and supplies needed before trying to make your own checks. It is also important to understand the standards that must be met for a bank to accept your printed check.

Invest in Check Printing Software

While it is possible to design your own checks, it requires graphic design skills and they have to be formatted just so. If you are looking to save time, check printing software is a great option. Several popular money management programs, such as Quicken and QuickBooks, offer this feature. These programs can also help you track payments by creating a record in your ledger when you use them to pay someone.

Purchase Check Stock Paper

To ensure that your printed check meets the standards set by banks, you must purchase a special type of paper called “check stock” or “MICR.” This paper is designed to prevent others from altering it. You may find this paper at most office supply stores. You must also install a special MICR font. This font is designed to print the magnetic ink characters required by banks for processing checks.

On the left side of your check, add the name of the person you are paying, and below that, add a line for the dollar amount in words (this should extend across most of the top part of the check). Finally, place the routing number in the bottom corner of the check next to the account number.
